The Danat Al-Khaleej Hospital is a 250-bed Women and Children hospital planned on a dense urban site in Dubai. It focuses on family-centered care and a holistic wellness service model. Natural elements, climate and a holistic approach to health and environment inspires the conceptualization of the built form of this project. The aim is to offer comfortable, functional, and trendsetting spaces with state -of-art facilities with an iconic image to create an ideal address for healthcare.

The FivD Advantage:

The design scheme is inspired by the local desert flower red thumb, mashrabiya and the mother’s embracing of a child. The elliptical tower design maximizes bay views for patients. A secondary parametric skin inspired by local fabric patterns reduces heat gains in the Emirates’ hot climate and envision a futuristic aesthetic. Green terraces as balconies add a bioclimatic feature to the façade, which helps in cooling the adjacent corridors. The perforated secondary skin allows for shaded outdoor areas and a reduced AC load for indoor spaces. It also increases the vertical stack effect to cause cooling between the skin and glazing.

While crystalizing the design requirements, in collaboration with HKS’s design team, some formidable challenges addressed include mitigating the traffic circulation within the small parcel, providing retail space on road level facing the highway, and giving an overall iconic look inspired by the local culture. Therefore, the design results from the master planning of the circulation and its integration with retail spaces facing the road.

The Danat Al Khaleej Hospital is oriented to capture the bay view in the distance and towards the Gulf and the Sports complex green area. Even within a tight site, the planning achieves an efficient traffic flow for vehicles and patients/staff and services.
